Broken 16x20
This is one of my new favorite pieces. Although, I have a tendency to say that about most of my new pieces. I really wanted to explore shadow and depth with this work. Initially, I had the idea of using a lot of color in this one. I was thinking about painting in spilled red wine. However, once I got started, I realized that it needed to be monochrome to really emphasize the reflection and shadow. This is one of the new pieces I will be showing at Studio 107 in July.
One night I was sitting on the front porch enjoying the breeze and a glass of wine. the first mistake I made was to set the glass on the ground next to my chair. The second mistake was to reach for it without looking. Obviously, the next step was to get a broom and a towel to clean up the mess. Of course, I couldn’t just throw the glass away without painting it first.
I guess, it’s situations like this that really inspire me and make me happy as an artist. There as so many beautiful things in the world that just don’t get seen. That’s why I enjoy painting still life. I can focus on blemishes , cracks, tears and other things that would otherwise be considered ugly or even worse, go completely unnoticed.
I promise that one of these days, I’ll get a real photographer to shoot my portfolio, but for now I guess you have to settle with the shots I take.
I’m also working on a new still life with two wine bottles and some flowers. I guess I unwittlingly started a series of wine-related paintings. I guess you paint waht you like, right? Well, I do like me some wine. Just for future reference though, I’m a sucker for good Scotch. (My birthday is in September.)
